Married 6/4/1898, Madison Co., IL. Went to work at age 9 at the Owens Illinois Glass Co. in Alton, IL, to help support his family. He said that the company always knew when the state inspectors were coming and the child laborers were hid while the inspectors were at the plant. In his twenties he began having chronic lung problems from years of inhaling silicon dust at work and was told by a medical doctor that he would not live very long unless he moved to a cleaner air environment. That was the reason to moving to the state of Washington. Took a train to Idaho, then boarded a river boat for Carson, WA. But the boat did not stop at Carson but at Stevenson, so they had to walk 6 miles back to Carson. Became a logger while his wife and mother ran the hotel in Carson. Moved several more time westward before finally locating on Puget Island, Cathlamet, WA.

Beloved Great, Great Uncle George lived to be 100 years and 1 month old. Grandparents - John and Phebe Bailey Canham, and Benjamin and Elizabeth Ellen Allis/Ellis Pearson Other children Nellie and Benjamin Canham.
