Donald Rettew Beittel was the seventh child, (5 lived past infancy), of Roy David Beittel, Sr. and Irene Ella Rettew Beittel. He graduated from Brown University, served in the Navy, was a salesman for various companies and served as President of Bloomcraft Inc. in New York City until his retirement. Donald was well respected in the business community and successful. He had an extremely sharp mind and in retirement learned clock repair, locksmithing and other trades. His home and family in Cinnaminson, New Jersey were his pride and joy. He and his wife had three children: David Roy Beittel, Don Ward Beittel, and Elizabeth Ann Beittel Wilhelm Shuler. Donald and his family lived at 301 Arbor Road in Cinnaminson for most of his adult life.
When Donald was about 12 he suffered from pneumonia. An ice cube became lodged in the oxygen tent that was being used to treat him and he actually "died" for a short period of time. He had straight hair as a child, but after the bout with pneumonia, his hair became wavy for the rest of his life. When asked about the near death experience he said that he remembered a "golden city with beautiful bright light".

Donald R. Beittel is buried in Lakeview Memorial Park, Cinnaminson, New Jersey. He was married to Alice M. Ward Beittel; she is buried next to him.
