William "Mac" was born in Kansas and his parents were Emory H and Martha I (Lawhon) McKown. He had 5 brothers and 4 sisters.

He joined the US Navy in WWII. After the war returned to Kansas, married and had two children. He then moved to California where he became a dancer and appeared in a number of movies. He remarried to Grete Hermes in 1951 and had three children. He opened his own dance studio in Simi Valley and later Downey. He had his own dance troop which toured Reno, Las Vegas, Japan and Aruba, etc. He married Nancy (Romeo) Boise in 1972.
