The plaque on the headstone reads as follows:

October 8, 1951

Feeling ashamed, that I, a great grandson of this Elisha Hewitt, a Revolutionary Soldier, should allow his grave with his wife's and his son's wife, my great grandmother, be over-grown with shrubs and trees, and the markers flat, soon to be broken and lost in the old abandoned cemetery down the road a few rods, I have purchased this lot in the newer cemetery, been promised perpetual care, and moved the stones here. I give a brief history of their ancestors also, in case other descendants may desire to trace their connection with this family that came to America more than 300 years ago.

Thomas Hewitt, B. in England, R. in Hingham, Mass. in 1647. John Hewitt, son of Thomas, R. in Marshfield, Mass., D. 1670. Solomon Hewitt, John's son, B. 1670, D. 1715, Marshfield, Mass. John Hewitt, Solomon's son, R. Norwich, Conn., B. 1700, D. 1760. Elisha Hewitt, John's son, R. Norwich, Conn., B. 1737. Elisha Hewitt, Elisha's son here buried.

Col. Phipps Waldo Hewitt, Elisha's son, D. 1848 in Michigan and buried there, where he went after his wife, Sally Hewitt, here buried, died.

Mariah Hewitt, daughter of Col. Phipps Waldo Hewitt and Sally Hewitt, B. 1807, D. 1884, M. Thomas Wisner, both lived, died and buried in Niagara County, N.Y.

Emily Wisner, daughter of Thomas and Mariah Hewitt Wisner, B. 1846, M. David Porter 1865, both buried in Lodi, N.Y.

I, Elmer G. Porter, son of David and Emily Wisner Porter, B. 1874, M. Celia Smith, and our two sons and grandchildren all living in Caywood, N.Y., this date.

For more detail, Hewitt's and Wisner's, reference Dr. Dorr Wisner, Lockport, N.Y., 11th Generation – Thomas Hewitt.
