The wind was blowing hard & made the tree difficult to handle. Alice Jane walked along a stretch of railroad siding trace to make the going easier.
Just about the time, Engineer J. W. Phillips pulled his freight train into the siding to allow another train to pass on the main line.
Probably the high wind kept the two women from hearing the train's approach or perhaps they did not realize that it was on the siding rather than on the main track.
Alice Jane was struck in the back & hurled into the ditch, sustaining a fracture at the base of the skull & chest injuries, dying at Page Memorial Hospital at 9 a.m. Christmas Day.
Her mother escaped injury.
