He was born June 27, 1904 in Wittenberg, the son of the late Mark and Gertrude (Roper) Cottrell.
He married Anna Rettig on September 17, 1925 in Eland. She survives.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Emerson, Wausau and one daughter, Anna May Butcher, Chicago; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Hazel Christensen and Marlin Klenam, both of Albuquerque, NM.
Funeral services were held October 26, 1975 at Schmidt-Schulta Funeral Home, Wittenberg. The Rev. N. Hellrud and the Rev. Claude Zabinski officiated. Interment was in Eland Cemetery, town of Norrie.
