Vella was born at Liberty, WV. Putnam Co., daughter of William F. Carney & Luzannia Alice WOODALL.

The family moved to Charleston, Kanawha County WV. about 1916. They first lived on 7th Ave. and later moved to Walnut Street that is now called a part of Stockton ST.

Vella married Joe W. Derrick in Charleston, Aug. 26, 1926. They had one daughter Marieda who married Russell Lee Edens Sr. in January of 1949.

Mrs. Vella Bell Derrick 74 of 21 Woodward Court, Charleston, died Wednesday Aug. 11, 1976 in Charleston General Hospital after a long illness. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist church.

Surviving husband Joe W. Derrick, daughter, Mrs. Marieda Edens of Charleston, sisters ; Mrs. Dorothy Roberts and Mrs. Ruth Knapp of Charleston, brothers; Delbert Carney of Huntington and the Rev. Willard Carney of Charleston, Milford Carney of Bell, and Roy Carney of Nitro.
Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.
