"Henry"-Christian Heinrich Schmidt was the son of Johann "Gottfried" Adam Furchtegott Schmidt and Theresia Concordia (Schmidt) Schmidt. He was born in Freyburg on the Unstrut River in the Province of Saxony (Sachsen). His country was taken over by Prussia. They were going to force him to join the Prussian army and of course, he would not, so he immigrated to America. He married in Chicago, Illinois--Mary Rose Wanatova (Waniata)on April 24, 1862. He was a shoemaker and later a farmer. He gave up a voyage on the boat, the Lady Elgin on Lake Michigan to make hand-made shoes for a poor family who badly needed them. This was before he was married. This saved his life as the Lady Elgin had a collision with another boat and sank and all aboard lost their lives!
Henry Schmidt's father died 21 Sept 1877 in Lowville, Lewis, NY and his stepmother, Fredericka died 12 Feb 1874 in Lowville. They were in a poor house. This info was obtained from a wonderful researcher back there looking thru the ledgers from the poor house. It was wonderful to finally find their death dates.
