Deceased Name: Isham "Ike" Coward : Coward coached winning teams
Winning became routine for Isham "Ike" Coward.

The basketball coach led his boys' varsity teams to victory more than 600 times in his career at Hutto, Brenham and Round Rock high schools. Along the way, they earned several district and regional championships.

"He had only three or four seasons where his teams didn't win district or go to a regional playoff game," said his daughter, Diane Winkelmann.

Coward - an avid golfer, tennis player and ballroom dancer - died Saturday from complications related to a stroke he suffered in September. He was 76.

Coward coached at Hutto, Brenham and Round Rock before returning to Hutto in 1977 to become school district superintendent. He retired three years later and moved to San Antonio to be close to his family.

Winkelmann said her father constantly was busy with coaching duties during the school year, although they spent time with him traveling throughout the state during the basketball season. In addition to basketball, he coached golf and was an assistant football coach.

"Coaching was a 15- to 18-hour-a-day job back then," she said. "But we got to spend time with him in the summer."

The father of four would take his children to the golf course, where he played nearly every day during the summer and taught them the sport.

"He could still shoot his age in golf. He did it several times in the last few years," Winkelmann said.

His only son, Mark, really took an interest in the game. Coward was very proud when his son attended the University of Houston on a golf scholarship, although Mark left after his freshman year to attend Southwestern University in Georgetown. He currently is the golf professional at Great Hills Country Club in Austin.

Other survivors include two daughters, Gail Malmstrom of Wichita, Kan., and Linda Uriarte of Caracas, Venezuela; two sisters, Eileen Singleton and Zoe Coward, both of San Antonio ; and seven grandchildren.

Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South, 1700 S.E. Military Drive. Burial is to follow at Mission Burial Park South.
