While his bride of 2 weeks watched from the stands, a "hot rod" race driver was killed here in what was to have been his last race.
He was William Brewster Pettit, 21, of Salt Lake City. The crackup occurred during the last lap" of the final event of the race program.
His wife, Mrs. Dulall Pettit, said her husband told her before the race:"Don't worry, honey. I'll drive carefully just for you." "I was never opposed to his racing," Mrs. Pettit said, "But Bill said he would get out of It next week. He was going to sell his hot-rod Thursday, and had a buyer located.
"So Council Bluffs was to be his last race." Bill was buried on July 29th,1949.
