Elisha William Brown, one of Waterford's most respected and prominent citizens, was laid to rest Tuesday afternoon in the Lower Waterford Cemetery beside his wife who died Feb. 1, 1935. Mr Brown's parents Bradley D. and Mary (Ross) Brown were among the first settlers in Waterford, coming there about 1800. In this pioneer home, Elisha was born on May 22, 1852. He was educated in the schools of his native town and attended Peacham Academy. Returning to his parental home he took up farming a vocation which he continued for the rest of life.
A man of exceptional good judgment, dependable and strictly honest his fellow citizens wisely sought him many times to assist in conducting the town affairs. Among the many town offices which he held was that of town clerk, a position he ably filled for twenty years. In 1890 he represented the town at Legislature and from 1910 to 1914 he was associate judge. He was a member and supporter of the Lower Waterford church and served as a deacon for many years. He was also a member of the Moose River Lodge, No. 82 F.&A.M. and Caledonia Lodge No. 6. Seventeen years ago he retired from active farming and has since made his home with his son Dwight on Higgins Hill where his death occurred Saturday, Nov. 21st.
The Funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the Union Baptist Church which he had attended since his residence in St. Johnsbury. Rev. John Chester smith conducted the services and was assisted by Rev. E. E. Grant. The Masonic ritual was used at the grave.
Mr. Brown was twice married. His first wife was Ella H. Blodgett of Glover who passed away the following year. In 1882 he was joined in wedlock to Miss Eliza C. Kinne of Waterford, daughter of Willard and Mary Jane (Parker) Kinne. Two sons were born to them, Harrie K. Brown and Dwight B. Brown of St. Johnsbury. Besides his sons he leaves three grandchildren. Those from out of town called here by his death were Harrie K. Brown of Lansing, Michigan and Nathan Kinne and Irving F. Carpenter. And of West Newton, Mass. Fred Stoddard, Mrs. Harriet Weaver, Miss Louise Stoddard and Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Stoddard of Peacham, Vermont.
