Henry was born in Germany in 1842, and emigrated to America in 1858. He settled in Ozaukee County, where he worked with his brother on a farm in Saukville for two years. He then worked on a farm in West Bend for eighteen months. After the West Bend farm, he returned to Saukville where he learned his trade, and two years later, he moved to Cedarburg for about eighteen months. He moved around quite a bit after that; first to Milwaukee, then he spent a short time in Chicago, and then a short time in Iowa. In 1867, he returned to Waubeka, where he built a shop in 1871. He employed two men, and had good success.

He married Wilhelmine Beger in 1868. They had four children; Louis, Herman, George, and Augusta.

He was a Democrat, and served as Town Treasurer. He was also a member of the Singer Society and Turnverein.
