He lived in Leutmannsdorf, Schlesien, Germany prior to coming to America in 1856. He married Margaretha Catharina "Meta" Meyer on November 4, 1862 in Baileys Harbor, Door, WI at the home of his father and mother, Enfred and Caroline Schermer.

"After a short illness August Schermer died on Friday afternoon. Deceased was a brother of Mesdames A. Hendricks, Jacob Apple, Wm Jackson and S.G.Nelson. Three children, all grown are left to mourn his loss. Funeral took place on Sunday." Door County Democrat, Sturgeon Bay, WI, April 13, 1895
"August Schermer departed this life on Friday and the funeral took place the following Monday. Deceased was about 61 years old and had been a resident of the Harbor for upward of thirty-five years, being one of the oldest settlers. He was a son of the late Ernest Shermer, and a brother of Mesdames Hendrick and Jackson. He leaves quite a large family, all of whom are married and doing for themselves."
