Alice Cary Black Newton, 93, formerly of Luray, passed away at the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community in Harrisonburg on Saturday, March 5, 2022.

She was born in Luray on Aug. 3, 1928, the only child of the late Lynn Varner Black and Ailene Cary Black. She had two aunts who were like second mothers to her, Gladys Cary Hinds and Kathleen Cary.

After graduating from Luray High School, Alice attended Junior college. She served as librarian for many years at the Page Public Library in Luray. She was a lifelong member of the Main Street Baptist Church in Luray.

On Oct. 27, 1959, Alice married Richard Elder Newton, who died on June 22, 1999. They resided in many different areas of the United States due to his military career.

From her husband's side of the family, she is survived by nieces and their families.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8, at the Leaksville Cemetery in Luray by the Pastor Tim Scott.
