John F. Benson was the youngest child of his parents Herman and Francie Dorr Benson. He was born on their farm located along the northeast shore of Bald Eagle Lake, a few miles north of White Bear Lake, MN. The family farm, originally owned by his grandfather Frederick W. Benson, included land where he and his brothers built the 68 acre Benson Airport.

For many years John owned and operated the Benson Airport, hangar and landing strip along Hwy 61 north of White Bear Lake. John was a first class aviator, stunt pilot, skydiver and mechanic. He was a wonderful storyteller, prankster, and dear friend to many. John remained single and left no descendants. He was survived by Patricia Sullivan, his girlfriend of many years. Pat is buried next to John at Union Cemetery. They share a monument. written by cousin Gregory Dorr
