Fairview resident Mildred May Nicks Howell, 88, died Monday, March 15.
Viewing hours will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, 520 W. Powell Blvd. A graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Mountain View Cemetery, Smith and Evans roads, Corbett. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20, at Corbett Community Church, 34309 N.E. Mershon Road, Corbett.
Mildred was born May 22, 1921, in Leota, Mo., to George and Virdie Hall Nicks, the oldest of six children. When she was 9 months old, the family moved to Villisca, Iowa. Mildred attended Gridley School.
In 1929, the family purchased a farm in Adams County, Iowa, and Mildred attended Nodaway Consolidated School. The family lost the farm after three years, so they rented a farm near Brooks, Iowa. Mildred finished the eighth grade in a one-room school there and spent two years in high school in Nodaway.
Her parents purchased another farm in Carbon, Iowa, and Mildred attended Corning High School for one semester before attending and graduating from Villisca High School in 1938.
On Nov. 26, 1938, she married Arthur Vernon Howell, and they had four children. They moved to Troutdale in 1942 and eventually settled in Corbett, where Mildred lived until 1996.
Mildred was employed with the state of Oregon doing secretarial work for 10 years. She was an active member of Corbett Community Church since 1955. She was an avid gardener and was known for her vegetables and beautiful flowers.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1988; and by her daughter, Marlis, in 1955.
Survivors include her sons, Arthur Keith Howell of Nevada and Allen Gene Howell of Corbett; daughter, Marsha May Rhodes of Roseville, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
