Capt. Rowden Passes Here

Captain Charles F. Rowden, 72, widely known steamboat captain, passed away at 3 p.m. Saturday at his home in Moulton Heights.

Born in Tennessee, Captain Rowden moved to Decatur around thirty-five years ago. Beginning his career as a young man during the height of the old steamboat days on the Tennessee River, he followed his calling for fifty years, retiring about eight years ago. For years he made a regular run from Chattanooga to Lock A below Decatur.

He is survived by a number of children and relatives in Decatur, as well as numerous friends throughout this section of the state. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Brown.

Rowden Rites To Be Held Monday

Funeral services for Captain Charles Rowden, 76, who died at his residence in Moulton Heights Saturday, will be held at 5 p.m. Monday from Brown's chapel by Rev. Elmer Piper. Interment will follow in the city cemetery, Brown directing.

Captain Rowden is survived by his wife; three daughters, Mrs. I.V. Jolly, Decatur; Mrs. Ruth Pointer, Philadelphia; Mrs. W.B. Cary, New Orleans; three sons, Paul Rowden, Sheffield; Elmer Rowden, Jacksonville, Fla; Charles Rowden, Alexandria, La; one sister, Mrs. G.H. Berry, Etowah, Tenn; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Pallbearers will be: David Gibson, E.W. Strother, Harold Carter, Carl Jones, Roy Poff and John Green.
