Russell G. Bachman Sr., 82, of Tryon, N.C., formerly of St. Petersburg, Fla., and South Bethlehem, died early Wednesday morning, Oct. 22, 2003, in the Spartanburg Hospital, Spartanburg, S.C., following an illness.

Born March 16, 1921, in Jefferson Center, he was the son of Albert and Leah Beggs Bachman. Mr. Bachman served with the 2nd Maine Division in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. He was in the home building and repair business. He was the original developer of the Marianne Estates in Shippenville and built many homes in the New Bethlehem area. Mr. Bachman then moved to the St. Petersburg, Fla., area where he built, owned and operated The Trade Winds Motel. He owned and operated The Delacado Motel on Treasure Island, Fla., for 13 years and later built, owned and operated the Park View Apartments in Rutherfordton, N.C. He was a member of the New Bethlehem Masonic Lodge No. 522 and the Coudersport Consistory. Mr. Bachman enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, flowers, gardening and designing and building houses and buildings. He was a Protestant.

Mr. Bachman married his wife of 57 years, Carolyn Powell Smith, in May 1946. She survives. Also surviving are a son, Russell "Rusty" Bachman Jr. of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a
daughter, Dianne Bachman and her husband, Jim Baumhover, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; one stepdaughter, Rochelle Smith Blake and her husband, Melvin, of New Bethlehem; four grandchildren, Ken Blake and his wife, Mandy, and Suzette Gunter and her husband, Mark, all of New Bethlehem, and Ryan Baumhover and Brette Baumhover of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and four great-grandchildren, Steve Blake and his fiancee, Jennifer Jantz, Kenndra Blake, Denelle Gunter and Toni Gunter, all of New Bethlehem.

He also is survived by two brothers and their wives, Lyle and Jean Bachman of Butler and Ralph and Ellen Bachman of New Castle; two sisters, Thelma Weigand of Cabot and Pearl Burtner of Butler; and a sister-in-law, Gail Francis and her husband, Jim, of Chiefland, Fla.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Bachman was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Hobert and Ella Powell; three brothers-in-law, George Weigand, Cecil Burtner and Kenneth Guy; and a nephew, Gary Francis.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday in the Rupert Funeral Home, New Bethlehem. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home with the Rev. James Swogger, pastor of the Oakland Church of God, officiating.

Interment will follow in the Oakland Cemetery at Distant, Armstrong County.
