Charles drowned in the Cedar River, but his exact date of death is unknown. He was last seen alive on 21 Mar 1938. On the morning of 30 April 1938, Archie Yerington went fishing about 1 1/4 mile around the bend south of Rochester. Thinking he was snagged and after a firm pull on the line, it was revealed that he had hold of Charles's remains. After being recovered from the muddy waters of the Cedar and taken to an undertaker, where positive identification was made, Charles was laid to rest that same day at PeeDee

Charles was known to have epileptic fits and it is thought he had a fit which caused him to fall into the river
