Son of James M.C. and Mary Jane Vardaman Hays. He fell in love with the girl next door and married her. Lela Mae Hart was 16 and he was 25.

His parents called him Willie, but his friends, nephews, and nieces called him Bill.

He was an innovative farmer who put his family first. He farmed at Dodsonville in the Texas panhandle until it was time for his boys to go to college. To be able to afford to send all three boys at the same time, the whole family moved to Lubbock and rented a house to save on college housing costs.

After the boys finished college, Bill and Lela moved to Muleshoe where he did dryland farming. But the urge was on him to farm more acreage and he wanted to try irrigation methods so they moved to Colorado. It was while they lived there that he became ill. He was being treated at the well-known Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas when he died.
