Sarah E. Whitaker, daughter of James and Katharine Jane Whitaker, was born in Brook, Indiana October 2, 1849. In early childhood the family moved to near Waynetown where her mother died. A little later, they moved to Delavan or Hopedale, Tazewell County, Illinois. Then to Oskaloosa, Iowa. In 1866 she returned to Brook, crossing the Mississippi river on the ice, in a sled drawn by six horses. On another trip to Iowa, she crossed the Mississippi in a ferry boat. The next crossing was made by train.

On May 28, 1868, she was married to Morris A. Jones who died October 24, 1925. Three children were born to them, Mrs. Minnie Schiltz of Brook, Miss Edith Jones of Chicago and Ezra Jones of Elmhurst, Illinois.

Mrs. Jones was the last of her immediate family. After an illness which confined her to her bed for eleven weeks, she passed into the great beyond, May 27, 1930.

She is survived by her three children: three grandchildren, Mrs. Nina Hess of Chesterton, Mildred Schiltz of Brook, and Alden Jones of Chicago; and one great grandson, William Morris Hess of Chesterton.

Mrs. Jones was a member of this church and in her active days she was an active member. She was a charter member of our Ladies Aid society. A pronounced characteristic was her home-centered life and many have cause to remember her warm hospitality. "She lived in a house by the side of the road and was a friend of all."
