Prominent Valley Resident Passes

Mrs Richard Johns of salt Lake City, formerly of Smoot, passed away at the Holy Cross Hospital at salt Lake City December 9, 1943 cause incident to old age. All that medical skill and loving hands could do for her, was done, but her book of life had been written and she was called to rest. Her life has been a story of love and devotion, and everyone that came in contact with her was spiritually uplifted, as she was one who truly loved her God and her neighbor as herself.
Since moving to Salt Lake City, her home has been an open house to her firends, (everyone was her friend) and with those who have called many is the burden that has lightened because of her helping hand. If work and sacrifice ages one it could surely be said of her, "She laid down her life for her friends".
Mary Ellen Johns was born at Springville Utah, February 23, 1870, daughter of Albert and Elizabeth Rowland Staten. Her early life was spent at Springville. November 15, 1888 she was united in marriage to Richard Johns. They made their home at Eureka Utah, where Mr Johns operated a butcher shop. Their four children were born at Eureka, Mrs Mary Millard, of Fairview, Charles and William of Afton and Albert who died in infancy.
In 1901 they moved to Star Valley locating at Fairview and shortly afterward moved onto a ranch north of Smoot. Besides rearing their own family they have helped in the rearing of two of Mrs Johns brother's children after their mother had died.
In 1929 they sold their ranch and moved to Salt Lake City, but the love of Star Valley brought them back every summer.
In January of 1936 Mr Johns passed away and since that time Mrs Johns has been content to spend most of her time at home in Salt Lake with her grandson gene. She has not been well for some time but she never gave up and admitted she was sick. Her independence made it hard for those who would liked to have helped her.
At her doctors advice she was taken to the hospital December 4th where she remained until her summons home came, and as the sun went down the evening of Dec. 9th, the soul of Mrs Johns passed on. She was taken to the God who gave her life.
Funeral services were held Mon December 11th at the Larkin chapel under the direction of the Rebecca Lodge of which she was a member.
