J.M. EDWARDS IS CALLED BY DEATH ON TUESDAY A.M.
Was Prominent Citizen of This Section; Buried On Wednesday
The passing of John M. Edwards, 53, at a Shreveport hospital at 6 o'clock Tuesday morning was a distinct shock to his many friends and relatives throughout the entire of LaSalle and Catahoula parishes where he had made his home throughout his entire lifetime.
Mr. Edwards was born near Blade in this parish 53 years ago last November, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.G. Edwards. Both preceded him to the grave within the past two years, as did one of his daughters only a few months ago.
He became ill several days ago and contracted pneumonia. On Sunday he was conveyed to the Shrevport hospital where medical skill and loving care combined to restore him to his former good health but failed to do so and his death came peacefully at 6 o'clock Tuesday morning.
The deceased was the owner of extensive farm land both in Catahoula and LaSalle parishes and was the owner of Edwards' Cafe here in Jena. Aside from being a planter he also was a gravel hauling contractor and was one of the most widely known of LaSalle parish citizens. He had always taken an active interest in the political affairs of the parish and while never offering himself for public office, yet he was always considered a power in political circles due to the close friendship and esteem he held among his fellowmen in all walks of life.
He is survived by his wife and four children, as follows: Mrs. Ray Stutson, Nelson, Matilda and Ada Lee Edwards. he also leaves four brothers and four sisters, who are: Genie, Tom, Henry and Bob Edwards; Mrs. Fred Lee, Mrs. Vienna Boyd, Mrs. Laura Bell and Mrs. Emmett Walker.
Funeral services were held at the Pine Grove Baptist church with Rev. Moreland Doughty officiating at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Interment followed in the cemetery at that place under the direction of Kinner & Stevens, local undertakers.
