Lilla is a daughter of Thomas B. Howland and Dorcas (Ellis) Howland. She was named after her two older sisters, who both died of Scarlet Fever a few months after she was born. Lilla married James Wallace Ellis on March 13, 1891 and they had eight children: Chester W. Ellis, Thomas Ellis, Hattie F. (Ellis) Dike, James Wallace Ellis, Jr., Charles Ellis, Otis Daron Ellis, Richard G. Ellis and Allen Stetson Ellis.
