OBITUARY OF MANSEL R. COFFEE

Mansel R. COFFEE, pioneer resident of the Panhandle who had lived in Perryton for the past 27 years, died Saturday afternoon in a local hospital after an illness of several months duration.

He was born on October 28, 1885, in Throckmorton, Texas, and moved to Miami in 1900 with his parents. He lived in Miami until 1910, when he married Miss Lillie Lee LONG on March 01, 1910 in Amarillo. After their marriage, the couple moved to Mobeetie, where he was engaged in the real estate, banking and mercantile business.

The family moved to Wheeler in 1919, where Mr. COFFEE opened a real estate office. Early in 1921 they moved to Miami, and late in that year they moved to Perryton.

Mr. COFFEE first bought what is now the Sanford Drug, and did real estate and insurance work on the side. He sold the drug store after about two years and devoted his time to real estate and insurance work until he was appointed postmaster in 1935. He resigned the postmastership effective November 01, 1946 because of ill health. He had suffered for 18 years with arthritis, and the disease became progressively worse.

During his years in Perryton, Mansel COFFEE was always in the forefront of every civic enterprise and was one of the town's greatest boosters.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Baptist Church.

Funeral Services were held Monday afternoon at the First Baptist Church with Rev. O. C. Curtis in charge.

Active pallbearers were S. S. DODSON, Miles EDWARDS. E. KELLEY, Drew ELLIs, Clyde COFER and Irvin HERGERT.

Honorary pallbearers were Carl ELLIS, L. H. LANCE, H. C. SANFORD, G. L. KENGLE, J. W. BUCKLEY, J. W. RICHARDSON, R. T. SHINDLER, Sam HERGERT, Arvie HALE and Paul BOWEN.

He is survived by his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Henry RICHARDSON, Mrs. Ike VERNON and Mary Margaret COFFEE, all of Perryton; a son, Mansel COFFEE, Jr., USMC, Akron, Ohio; four brothers, Glen COFFEE and Woods COFFEE, Amarillo, J. V. COFFEE, Miami and Henry COFFEE, Pampa; and one sister, Mrs. Mary LOCKE, Big Springs, Texas.
