The Family acquired/took the name Laarman as a result of Jan Gerrits Koers mother Hermina Jans(en) the widow of Hendrik Gerrits Koerts (1766-1811), marrying Jan Manussen Laarman (1772-1846) on 21 Aug1812 in Gramsbergen, Overijssel NL.

The founder of the Holland "Kolonie" Albertus C. Van Raalte and family, with several others left Arnhem and took a Rhine boat to Rotterdam. From there they left by canal Voorn to the sea on 2 Oct 1846. This group including Jan Laarman, wife;Geesje, son; Hindrik Jan and the widow (Hermina) Laarman immigrated/arrived 17 Nov 1846 • New York, New York, USA on the Ship Southerner. The immigrants left New York for Albany by steamship, then took a canal boat to Buffalo. They then left on 27 Nov 1846 to cross Lake Erie on the way to Detroit Michigan. Most of the group stayed the winter in Detroit while the men worked. A small number of the group went to the "Kolonie" on 9 Feb 1847 and stayed at the "Old Wing Mission" in Fillmore Township, Michigan. The others followed in the spring.
