Funeral services for Wilbur Halter will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 3, 2010, at the Pence - Reese Funeral Home in Newton. A visitation with the family will be held one hour, prior to the funeral on Friday, at the funeral home. As an expression of sympathy, memorials in Wilbur's name are being designated to Hospice of Jasper County or Newton Bible Missionary Church.

Wilbur Blaine Halter, 86, the son of Leopold Lee and Matilda Marie (Bach) Halter, was born August 14, 1924 in Baxter, Iowa. He graduated from the Baxter Senior High, Class of 1941, and served his country during World War II, with the US Army.

On January 12, 1947, Wilbur was united in marriage with Anna Jean McDonald.

He devoted his life to his wife, family, church and friends, and was a member of the Bible Missionary Church. Wilbur was employed in maintenance department for the Newton Schools, retiring in 1986.

Wilbur died Monday afternoon, August 30, 2010, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Lucille; and brothers: Louis (Lois), Robert and Harold.

Those left to honor Wilbur's memory include his wife Jean; three daughters: Linda (Earl) James, Joyce (Joe) Behrens and Mary (Dennis) Sloan, of Newton; his son David (Bev) Halter of Des Moines, IA; his six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; a sister Shirley Brown of Newton; a brother Lawrence (Cora) Halter of Baxter; two sisters-in-law: Helen I. Halter and Helen M. Halter, of Newton; a host of nieces and nephews; and many good friends.

Calling hours will be Friday from One hour prior to services at Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home, 310 N. 2nd Ave. E., Newton, IA. The funeral will be Friday at 11:00 at Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home, with Rev. David Campbell officiating.

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Newton on Friday.
