Edward Lee Preston, 79, of 816 Third St., retired city superintendent of streets, died at Marietta Memorial Hospital at 9:55 p.m. Thursday. He had not been in good health but had been down town last Saturday. He entered the hospital early this week.

Mr. Preston was well known in Marietta. He was born here Nov. 16, 1863, the son of Calvin and Matilda Preston. His father was a native of England. (??) Mr. Preston was the last of four brothers and sisters.

He served as superintendent of Marietta streets for many years, the 1913 flood occurring in the period during which he served. From here, Mr. Preston went to Canton, where he was superintendent of streets for 10 years. Following his retirement, he returned to Marietta about five years ago to make his home.

Mr. Preston was a member of the Congregational Church and of Harmar Lodge No. 390, F. & A.M.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Julia A. Preston; one daughter, Mrs. Clyde Hovis; a son, Earl Preston of Raleigh, S.C., and four grandchildren, Misses Eleanor and Betty Hovis of Cleveland, Mrs. George Robertson of Canton and Pvt. Donald E. Preston of Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Dixon Shaffer funeral home with Rev. Virgil Myers officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery with Harmar Masonic Lodge in charge of services at the grave.
