Mrs. Viola Parks, 60-odd years old, for years a prominent Bedford resident, is dead in a hospital at Tulsa, Oklahoma, according to an announcement received here by Day & Carter, local undertakers. Details regarding her passing are meager, it having only been learned that she passed away last Tuesday morning in a Tulsa hospital following a brief illness from pneumonia. It is understood that she went to Tulsa from Indianapolis about two weeks ago on business and her fatal illness developed following her arrival there.

Viola (Parks) Edwards was born about 1857 and grew up in Franklin, Indiana. Her father Robert Milton Parks, a Baptist minister, encouraged all his children to study and better themselves, and Viola and her sister Theo were among the first women graduates of Franklin College in 1874.

On December 20, 1879, Viola Parks married Harbert Edwards from Mitchell and moved to Mitchell. Harbert was a farmer. Their son Oscar was born in 1884. In 1897, Viola published her first book of poetry, "After Twenty Years, or, Henry and Lamart and Other Poems." The Edwards family moved to Bedford about that time.

In late 1907, Viola sued for divorce from Harbert; the court denied the application but her husband moved to a rented room at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Milton Tolliver at 16th and N Streets where Harbert fell from a second-floor window on April 24, 1908 and died. Three years later, according to the 1910 census, Viola and her son Oscar lived at 1420 16th Street where the Circle K parking lot is now. Oscar was a traveling hardware salesman. Oscar married Bertha Adamson shortly thereafter; the couple had two children, daughter Frances born 1912 in Bedford and son Oscar Jr. who was born in 1920 in Oklahoma. It isn't clear why the Edwards family were in Oklahoma.

Viola (Parks) Edwards published a second book of poems, "Saul of Tarsus and Judith and Other Poems," in 1915. Her only child Oscar died in 1925 at the age of 41. Overcome with grief, Viola died the following November. She, her husband Harbert, their son Oscar, Oscar's wife Bertha and their two children are all buried in Beech Grove Cemetery.
