James Gallaher was driving a pickup truck northbound on U.S. Highway 287 about three miles south of Townsend on April 7, 2001 when the right tire of the truck slipped off the edge of the roadway, causing the truck to swerve into the ditch.

Gallaher's wife, Amy, was sitting next to him in the front seat and their children, 9-year-old Brian and 11-year-old Ashley, were sitting behind them.

In trying to avoid hitting an abandoned approach, Gallaher veered across the road into oncoming traffic, striking a vehicle carrying Neil Shaffer and George Hensley.

The crash killed Amy and her stepdaughter Ashley, as well as George Hensley.
