16-year-old Kimberly had just graduated 8th grade and moved to Gardiner to live with her grandparents. On 17 July 1990, she was wading with two younger girls in the Gardiner River near where it joins the Yellowstone River when she was swept off her feet by the current. She was unable to swim. The river carried her away and she was presumed drowned. Her body was found in the Yellowstone on 4th August 1990.
Note: Kimberly's obituary, published Thursday, 9 August 1990 in the Billings Gazette, states she "died Tuesday near Gardiner as a result of drowning." I presume Tuesday, 7 August 1990 was the day the family received confirmation of her death.
