ROBERT L. BARBER, 84, of Pettus, died Thursday, March 28, 2002. He was born October 25, 1917, in Slocum, to the late Luther and Katherine Mainer Barber. He was a nurse for the U.S. Army and a Baptist. He retired from the U.S. Army after 24 years of service. Survivors: daughter, Judy Hoffman of Madison [Indiana]; sons, Jim Barber of Orlando, Florida, and Robert Barber of Bedford [Indiana]; sister, Lois Conway of Pettus; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Preceded in death by sister, Mabel Neuse, and parents. Graveside services will be 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Runge Cemetery. Eckols Funeral Home, Kenedy.

R.L. was married once, to Mabel Eloise Elledge about 1944, and the couple resided in Arkansas. Together, they had three children: Bob, Judy and Jim. R.L. and Eloise were divorced about 1952. Eloise remarried, but R.L. did not. He remained dedicated to his military career, rising to the level of Sargent 1st Class.
