They lived in Creich Parish, Sutherlandshire, Scotland, in a croft called Kinlochlaggan.

Their children as listed in church records, I will list just how things were originally written (spelling errors and all) in the records of the Old Parish Register.

Family Historian Kathleen Gunn Turpin went to Scotland in July 1978 and got as many records as she could, plus researched families in America for a year, then put it in book form in 1979. At that time Hugh and Margaret (Marion) had over 750 descendants that she could find. They included 41 grandchildren, 91 great-grandchildren (with 32 known living at that time), 143 G-great Grandchildren, 288 G-G-great Grandchildren and 177 G-G-G-great Grandchildren, with a dozen or so in next generation.

After the Highland Clearances those that were lucky enough to remain in the Creich and Dornoch and other Highland Parishes were forced to live on such miserable land allotments, or scraps of moor and bogland, that they lived in great poverty. The area of Kinlochlaggan-Kinlochloggan is now part of the Andrew Carnegie estate.

Their son Finlay was the only son to remain in Scotland, as will as his sisters. The other brothers going to North America.
