Lt. Col. John W. Robinson, USAF Retired, died Thursday, March 10,2005 at the Roberts Hospice Care Center following an etended illness. Born Jan. 30, 1918, in Dallas, Texas, he was a graduate of North Texas State University which he attended on a football scholarship playing quarterback and defensive guard. He was a member of the Texas National Guard, Troop E, 112th Calvary (last active horse calvary) from 1936 until he was accepted for flight training by the Army Air Corps in 1941. Capt. John 'Robbie' Robinson flew P-47's with the 404th Fighter Group during World War II. He participated in the D-Day invasion of Europe, flying top cover over the beach. From April 24, 1944, until October 3, 1944, he flew 55 combat missions, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. After World War II, he remained in the Air Force, and retired after 22 years of service. Following retirement, he moved to the Gordon Chapel area of West Putnam County where he operated a small ranch. He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman Christopher and Eugenia Oliver Robinson and wife, Willouise Wilson Robinson. He is survived by his children, Teresa, John (Sandi), William (Mary Ann), and Richard (Paula), all of Hawthorne, six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Burial will be in the National Cemetery in Bushnell, on Thursday, March 17, 2005, at 2:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Hospice of the Lakes, 6400 St. Johns Ave., Palatka, FL 32177.
