John Fray Keyser was a son of Peter Keyser and Nancy Fray. He was one of six brothers that went off to war.
John enlisted in Luray, Va. at the age of 24 on 09 AUG 1861 as a Private in Company D, Virginia 7th Cavalry Regiment.
Other records indicate he was also once a member of the Dixie Artillery.

John fell in defense of the "Lost Cause" in June, 1862, during the Seven Days fight around Richmond. His remains were removed from the battlefield a few years after his death and interred in the family graveyard.
