Arnold served in US Army during World War II and attained the rank of private first class. On one occasion, while engaged in combat with Germans in Italy, Arnold was hit in the neck by their gunfire, but managed to fight until the end of the battle in spite of his injury. He later worked in the lumber industry and was one of the two owners of Riippa Lumber, along with his brother John R. Riippa.
