WILLIAM WALLACE BAILEY

Born in Newbury, Vermont October 29, 1794, died in Rutland January 11, 1854. The seventh of twelve children of CAPTAIN JACOB BAILEY 1755-1837 and MARY "POLLY" LADD BAILEY 1766-1815, he was a grandson of noted Revolutionary War and Vermont patriot, GENERAL JACOB BAILEY 1726-1815, "The Father of Newbury", and PRUDENCE NOYES BAILEY 1725-1809.

A carpenter by trade and an early settler of Rutland with older brothers Ezekiel Ladd Bailey and Jacob Noyes Bailey, the widower William W. Bailey married BETSEY BUTMAN (born December 11, 1803, died March 12, 1863) on April 17, 1828. She was the daughter of JAMES BUTMAN 1776-1848 and ESTHER MOULTHROP BUTMAN 1780-1852 of Rutland. They had four children: WILLIAM WALLACE BAILEY 1832-1910 (Brooklyn, NY), ELIZABETH CAROLINE BAILEY (RANDALL) 1834-1865, JAMES BUTMAN BAILEY 1837-1922 (Pasadena, CA) and JOEL GREEN BAILEY 1840-1916 (Buffalo, NY).
