Whirled Around A Shaft - Terrible Death Of John Kelley In The Mill At Hinckley
HINCKLEY, July 23 - Monday night, a few minutes past 10 o'clock, while John Kelley, a man of about 50 years of age, was at work in the lower part of the mill at Hinckley, a belt ran off, and while attempting to adjust it he was caught and thrown around the shaft in such a manner as to crush him frightfully, and when extricated his clothing had all been torn from his body. He died fifteen minutes later. Charles Norman, superintendent of this department was present, and in trying to rescue Kelley came very near the same fate. About ten other men were in the vicinity, but as the whole time consumed by the accident did not exceed five seconds it was impossible to help. The body was immediately conveyed to the house of his son-in-law, Fred Morrison. His widow and two daughters, Mrs. Fred Morrison and one younger, unmarried, survive. Dr, Roberts, of Trenton, was called and arrived in twenty-five minutes. Coroner Hunt of Holland Patent held an inquest today and the jury found in accordance with the above facts.
