John William Snodgrass was born at Rynards Mill [=Rinard Millsl], Monroe Co., Ohio, September 1, 1850. During the year of 1866 he came with his grandparents to Pottawatomie County, Kansas. His parents** died when he was 2 years old, and he had his home with his grandparents after that time. In 1873 he came to Council Grove and located on the farm where he died August 1, 1919, at 6:30 a.m.
August 26, 1879, he was united in marriage to Miss Alice Edwards, who together with their four children, survive him. Their children are, Alonzo F., Salina, Kansas; Chas. E., of the home; Oriel C. Thomas, of Council Grove; and Leota B., still at home. All of these, together with their four grandchildren, were present at the funeral services, which were held at the home Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, August 3rd.
He leaves two sisters and three brothers, namely, Celia McMay [should be McNay] of Louisville, Kansas; J. C. Snodgrass of Louisville, Kansas; Marion, of Council Grove; Mrs. C. Stenger , of Council Grove; and Andrew, of Phoenix, Ariz.
Mr. Snodgrass had been ailing for some time. All that could be done for his comfort and restoration was done, and yet it seemed that naught availed. As the weeks lengthened into months, it was apparent that his days were numbered and that his life was drawing toward its close. … his last resting place in the Four Mile cemetery. …
[** Note: Only his mother died when he was two. His father lived until 1903 and married three more times, having children by all four wives.]
