JOHNNY TUCKER SR.
CALLED BEYOND
Uncle Johnny Tucker, one of the oldest men of this county, passed away Monday night at the home of his son, J.C. Tucker, in the Mill Creek district. He was eighty four years old and has been very feeble for several years. His death was the result of old age.
The funeral occured Tuesday noon at Live Oak church two miles east of Jackson, where his membership in the Primitive Baptist church existed.
Mr. Tucker was a member of a very noted family of thirty two children, he being one of the oldest of the children, and for half a century he was a leading spirit in Colquitt county. He was a young man twenty-one years old when the county was formed out of Thomas county, and it was near his home, in what is now the Mill Creek district, that the first term of court was held in the county, before a definite county site had been agreed on. He was justice of the peace in his district for many years and was typical of the justices of olden days, being a man of jovial nature he was greatly admired by all who practiced in his court. He at one time represented the county in the legislature, and while he was not politically ambitious, he was influential in county politics half a century ago.
He is survived by eight children, three boys being J. C. Tucker, with whom he lived when he died, Elbert Tucker and Cap Tucker. There were five daughters: Babe (Mrs. Sonny Norman), Sis (Mrs. Henry Monk), Nannie (Mrs. Mike Horne), Florence (Mrs. Jerry Hancock), and Sallie (Mrs. Willie Price, Jr.)Scores of grand children and great grand children survive him.
John Tucker, Sr. has a CSA pension application on line in the GA Archives virtual vault. He gives birth as 24 March 1833 in Thomas County., GA. He says he enlisted in March 1862 and served with Company H of the 50th Regt. GA Vols. But he was discharged for health reasons in July 1862. He reenlisted in 1863 and served until the end of the War.
