Gary Lee Houghton, 66, of Downing, MO, passed away unexpectedly September 22, 2004 at the Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis, MO.
The son of James and Dorotha (Current) McNary, Gary was born on March 10, 1938, in Tama, IA.
He was united in marriage to Phyllis Smoot and to this union four children were born, Brian, Jodie, Beth and Jeffery. He married Donna Hunt and later married Pam Spiker.
Gary is survived by his wife, Pam Houghton of Downing, MO; his children, Brian Houghton of Downing, MO, Jodie and husband, Gary Holt of Arbela, MO, Beth Houghton of Memphis, MO; step-children, Bindy and husband, John Zimmerman of Martinsburg, PA, Becky and husband, Troy Heath of Keithsburg, IL, and Johnna and husband, Jamie Snyder of Kirksville, MO; 11 grandchildren, Nyci Dunnett and fiancee, Todd Harbison, Seth Dunnett and fiancee, Barbara McBee, Cody Holt, Cali Holt, Jade Holt, Haylei Zimmerman, Clinton Zimmerman, Tanner Heath, Victoria Heath, Vanessa Snyder and Aiden Snyder; two brothers, Jimmy McNary of Lancaster, MO and Bob McNary of Arizona; five sisters, Beatrice Fugate of Downing, MO, Bernadine Ritter of Woodward, IA, Barbara Ross of St. Louis, MO, Betty Jo Purvis of Sedalia, MO, and Marjorie Bausell of Kirksville, MO.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Jeffrey Alan Houghton and one sister, Berniece Shumate.
Gary was a graduate of the Downing High School and also Auto Body Trade School. He owned and operated Houghton Auto Sales in Downing, MO and was an active member of the Downing Baptist Church where he was particularly interested in the youth group.
Funeral services were held September 25, 2004 at the Downing Baptist Church in Downing, MO with David Barton officiating. Music was provided by Twila Mathews, pianist and Jackie Doubet and Jana Muntz vocalists. A CD selection was also played. Pallbearers were Corky Cook, Jackie Goosey, Larry Robinson, Lavon McNary, Gary Ross and Rex Beeler. Honorary bearers were Ed Atkinson, Jeryl (Stoney) Stone, John Spiker, Cody Holt, Seth Dunnett, Larry Ross and Garlan Wiabel. Memorials have been established for the Downing Baptist Church. Burial was in the Downing City Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Lancaster and Downing, MO.
