Doris Violet Burton Colburn, age 93, went home to be with her Lord on April 24, 2004. She has eagerly anticipated her reunion in heaven with her husband of 52 years, Urty Jual Colburn, her parents, three brothers, three sisters, and many friends and loved ones.

Doris was born on September 24, 1910, the fifth child of Jerome and Susan Emma (Sudie) Burton. She was a resident of Orange for 90 years until her move to Dallas in April, 2001, to be near her children: Daughter, Gayle Colburn Copeland of Dallas, and son, Gary Burt Colburn of Corsicana.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers: Vertis Burton, Lowell Burton, and R.E. (Pat) Burton; sisters: Lennie Killen, Sudie Ruth Eddleman, and Beatrice Fuller; their spouses; in-laws: Gladys Freeman, Arthur Colburn, Edna Toney, Paige Breazeale, and Roy A. Colburn; their spouses; nephews: Jerome Eddleman Burton, Gerald (Jerry) Burton, and Charles Manley Toney; nieces: Mary Lou Anderson and Bonnie Wilcox; and many aunts and uncles, including Lawrence J. Lewis.

Survivors include: Son, Gary and wife JoAnn Colburn; daughter, Gayle and husband David Copeland; seven grandchildren: Steve and wife Susan Colburn, Laurie and husband Ralph Duke, Colin and wife Jennifer Colburn, Dianna and husband Bruce Meier, AlIen and wife Delanna Copeland, Bill and wife Jennifer Copeland, Kevin and wife Millie Copeland; 12 great-grandchildren: Jessica, Jillian, and Aaron Meier, Will and Stephanie Colburn, Hannah and Caleb Duke, Cody and Kyler Copeland, Zachary and Benjamin Colburn, and Paul Copeland; in-laws: Alice Colburn and Elvin Breazeale; nephews: Leon Killen, Wayne Colburn, Dale Colburn, and Bill Colburn; nieces: Mizelle Glaze, Dorothy Huckaby, Bebe Wilson, Jan Sellers, Sue Powell, Carolyn Hamilton, Sudie Smith, Claire Carter, Joanne Osborne, Ann Biggs, Emily Beckman, and Cindy Chambellan; and many great and great-great nephews and nieces.

Besides her family and friends, Doris enjoyed many years memberships in The Woman's Club of Orange, The Garden Club, T.N.T. (since 1938, she being its first president), and Gray Ladies of Orange Memorial. In 1950, she organized and directed for many years the Royal Ambassadors of First Baptist Church. With her sister, Sudie Eddleman, they produced the largest combination Girls' Auxiliary/Royal Ambassador Recognition Service in the history of First Baptist Church. Her great love for missions led to her long involvement with the Woman's Missionary Union, R.A.'s, and G.A.'s.

Service will be held Friday, April 30, 2004, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 602 Green Ave., Orange. Interment will follow at the family plot at Jett Cemetery on Old Highway 90.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange.

Pallbearers are Jack Smith, Ben Culpepper, Charles Phillips, Mitch Landry, Kenneth Wilcox, and Dan Mohon. Honorary pallbearers are Eddie Frenzel, Sidney Caillavet, Charles Wilcox, Jack Taylor, Bob Armstrong, Don Blanchette, Weldon Townsend, Robert Wilson, Jim Pledger, Phil Grooms, Herman Bowler, John Curtis, and other deacons of First Baptist Church.

Memorial gifts may be given to First Baptist Church, designating local missions.
