William enlisted as a Private in Company E/G of the First Regiment of Georiga Regulars, CSA on June 30, 1863. While a member of the Regiment, Private Barfield saw action in the Battle of Olustee (FL), Charleston (SC), Savannah (GA), and finally throughout various locations in North Carolina as the War drew to a close. William was with the unit when General Joseph E. Johnston, CSA surrendered the Army of Tennessee to General W.T. Sherman, US Army on April 26, 1865 in Greensboro, NC. He was paroled on May 1, 1865. Of the 367 effectives that began the War with the First Regiment, only 45 officers and men surrendered with the Army of Tennessee. Deo Vindice.
