iReport (Ken Jones) — On Monday, March 8, 2010, George and Catherine Jones of Bel Air, Maryland, lost their mother and their mother-in-law to natural causes. Catherine's mother Madeline Muriel Wagner (nee Bell) passed away at 5 AM. Later in the day, George's mother Marie Florence Jones Wheeler (nee Danner) passed away at 5 PM. Sons Ken, Robert and George lost both of their grandmothers that day.

The coincidental deaths were accompanied by an eerie set of similarities. Both women were born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1915. Both attended Eastern High School, class of 1934 – Marie eventually had to drop out to help support the family. Madeline's daughter married Marie's son. Both lived and died in the same building at the Oak Crest Retirement Community in Baltimore. Both had the same initials, MW. Both were aged 94 at the time of their deaths. Both had independently made final arrangements years in advance at the Evans Funeral Chapel, in the same office. Both had selected the Moreland Memorial Park Cemetery for burial years in advance. Both viewings at Evans were held on the same day, in adjacent rooms. Both burials at Moreland were also held on the same day.

Madeline Muriel Wagner (nee Bell) was born on March 31, 1915 in Baltimore, Maryland, to Alonzo Bell and Catherine Anna (nee Herr). She was named after her mother's two younger sisters, Madeline and Muriel. She is listed as Muriel Madeline Bell on her birth certificate because the midwife accidentally reversed the names on the form. For years the family had searched for the birth records in vain but the state of Maryland said they did not exist. During the past year, someone who worked in the records department finally noticed that the names were reversed.

She was the third of four children and loved to roller skate, dance and play "bean bag toss" as a child. She attended Eastern High School, class of 1934. She married Frederick Le Roy Wagner on "square root" day, June 6, 1936. She had three daughters, Cathy, Mary and Joan.

She loved to spend time playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, serving them countless chocolate milkshakes. Madeline baby-sat many of the children until her husband passed away in 1998. She was never sick and always had a positive outlook on life each day.

She is survived by one brother, Alonzo Jr., three daughters, nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Marie Florence Jones Wheeler (nee Danner) was born on September 12, 1915 in Baltimore, Maryland to George Henry Danner and Lillian Marie (nee Lucas). She was named after her mother and grandmother. At age 4, her father abandoned the family, forcing her mother and two sisters to move in with her grandmother. Her mother remarried and a step brother was added to the family.

She was raised in Hamilton (Baltimore) and went to St. Dominic's Elementary, Montebello Junior High, and Eastern High School, class of 1934, but had to quit school at age 16 to work full time and help support the family. She completed her GED at night school while working full time. Marie's first job was at the Gaiety Theater box office. Later she work at Hochschild Kohn's in the candy department where she developed a love for Jordan Almonds.

She married Robert Jones on December 31, 1932 at age 17 by eloping in Elkton, MD. After a few months she moved to Brooklyn, NY where she worked at the A&S Department Store while Robert was at sea on ESSO tanker ships. She had three carefree years before starting a family that quickly grew to 8 children (6 boys and 2 girls). She delivered Western Union Telegrams with five kids in tow during WWII to help in the war effort. After the birth of the eighth child she returned to the work force as a counter waitress at the Hot Shoppes in Hamilton. She later worked as a credit clerk at the Hecht Company in Northwood, working her way up to become Credit Manager at Hecht's downtown store.

She was married to Robert for 49 years before his untimely death in 1981. At 75 years old she remarried to Albert Wheeler until he passed away in 2002.

She was very competitive and enjoyed playing Bridge, Pinochle, Scrabble and crossword puzzles. She loved bowling, gardening, reading and traveling. She learned to cross country ski at age 70.

She is survived by eight children, thirty-three grandchildren, and an ever-growing number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Loving and kind in all her ways,

Upright and just, to the end of her days;

Sincere and true, in heart and mind,

Beautiful memories, she left behind.
