“Mrs. Ephriam Knowles, age 75, for many years a resident of Davis Township, passed away about 6:10 o’clock Friday morning at her home six miles east of Attica. She had been ill for the past three weeks with pneumonia, but death was caused by a paralytic stroke which she suffered a few hours before her death.

Mrs. Knowles was born April 25, 1860, in Warren County, near Green Hill, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin R. Watkins. In October, 1879, she was married to Ephriam Knowles, they moving to Davis Township twenty-one years ago.

She was a member of the Attica Free Methodist church.

Besides the husband she leaves two foster children, Mrs. Naomi Grammer and Roy Knowles, both of Davis Township.

The body was brought to the Ferguson funeral home in Attica where it was prepared for burial and was taken to the home of Mrs. Grammer Saturday morning. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at two o’clock at the Salem church east of Attica in Davis Township, Rev. U.S. Ferguson, of Attica, assisted by Rev. J.M. McCaw, pastor of the Attica Free Methodist church, and Rev. W.W. Ott of Bridgeport, Illinois, officiating. Interment was made in Salem cemetery.” – March 19, 1936

“Mrs. Nannie Elizabeth Knowles, daughter of Benjamin and Nancy Moor Watkins, was born April 23, 1860, and departed this life March 13, 1936, age 75 years, ten months and 18 days. At an early age she gave her heart and trust to the Savior, to who she reared a life of loving service and was at her death with her husband, a member and worker in the Free Methodist church, having for years been identified with the class at Antioch.

She was united in marriage at the age of nineteen to Ephriam Knowles. Their union not being blessed with children they gave the care and love of a father and mother to their foster son and daughter, Roy and Naomi Knowles. Her last illness was borne with patience and resignation, painting the ways to others and looking forward to the blessed hope of seeing the face of Him in whom she had believed.

She leaves to mourn her loss and to look forward to a reunion, her husband, her children, Roy Knowles, Attica R.R. No. 2, and Mrs. Naomi Grammer, of the same address. Three brothers, Joe, of Lafayette, Stephen, Lafayette, and Edward, of Mt. Ayr, and a host of nieces and nephews, and friends also survive.

She leaves also many friends. She will be sorely missed, but we think of her as not dead, but just away.

Those attending the funeral from a distance were: Nieces and nephews – Mrs. Fannie Parker, of Chicago, Illinois, Miss Harriet Gooden of Eston, John Jr. Gooden, of Elston, Mr. and Mrs. Bailey of Kentland, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Knowles and family of Lafayette, Wilbur Knowles and daughter, Betty Gene, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Knowles and family, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Knowles, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Tague, Mrs. Joe Followay, all of Lafayette; Mr. and Mrs. James Delaney and family and David Delaney, of Frankfort; Mr. and Mrs. Addie Gooden and family of West Lebanon; Mrs. Harris Albright, Mr. and Mrs. Will Dandruff, Mr. and Mrs. Faye Kieths, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Bailey, all of Lafayette, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Bailey of Thorntown; Mrs. Paul Fenters, of Morrocco; two step-sisters, Mrs. Minnie Knowles, of Lafayette and Mrs. Stela Henderson, of Detroit, Michigan; a granddaughter, Mrs. Ovice Martin, of Elwood, Indiana; three brothers, Edward Watkins, of Mt. Ayr, Joe and Steven of Lafayette; and a host of relatives and friends.” – March 26, 1936
