James had eight brothers and sisters and a family of Civil War experience, as he had.

His sister Isabella Lyon Patterson Eldridge and her husband, Myron, are buried in Arlington National, as well. Robert Patterson, father of James and Isabella, also was a Civil War veteran, as was brother-in-law Henry Irvine, who also is at Arlington National. Henry Irvine's father-in-law Robert Patterson and Henry Irvine's Civil War veteran brother Alfred are buried with Henry's wife and her Patterson family in nearby Congressional Cemetery.

James worked in the District area as a physician. He was married and widowed, but the exact name of his wife is yet unclear. (The destroyed 1890 census can't answer and the earlier censuses and city directories do not cross-reference or cover the period clearly.)

The 1900 census, however, identifies him as a Treasury clerk, living with his sister Blanche. In the 1910 census, he was living with his sister Henrietta.

It also is possible that his father Robert Patterson died while visiting him in 1873, which is when James was yet in medical school at Georgetown. The rest of James' family does not appear to have lived in the District at that time, but after Robert was buried in Congressional Cemetery, rather than where the family lived at the time, James' widowed mother and several of his siblings moved to the District, also, seemingly after 1882. But James' sister Henrietta's brother-in-law and fellow veteran, Alfred Irvine, had moved to the District in the 1870s. So family ties seemed to propel the moves, but the exact rationale or order is not quite clear yet.
