William Vose Obituary

William Fowler Vose CHESAPEAKE - Retired U.S. Navy Capt. William Fowler Vose, 89, died peacefully in his sleep Saturday, May 23, in his home in Chesapeake. He was born May 21, 1920, to Alice Fowler and William Cecil Vose. Bill graduated from Hampton High School in 1937, attended Severn River Prep School, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in December 1941, and later received his master's degree in electrical engineering from MIT. Upon graduation from the USNA, he was assigned as communications officer on a minelayer in the Solomon Islands campaign. He also served as executive officer of a destroyer in the Marianas, Philippines, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa operations including the Battle of Surigao Strait. He married Helen Cromwell upon his return from the war; they were married 29 years until her death in 1971. He married Mary Musgrave Weed Barnard in 1973 and that union lasted 35 years until Mary's death in January 2009. He retired from the Navy as a weapon specialist in 1964 and worked for the Naval Safety Center in Norfolk until his second retirement. After retiring, he served as a volunteer at Bayside Hospital and was also co-editor for Directory & Labels for the Retired Officers Wives Society. He was a Boy Scout leader and Scoutmaster of Troop-15 from 1959-1960 and remained active for many years. He rebuilt cars, player pianos and clocks as hobbies. Bill was an original "computer geek" and spent many hours building his own computers and surfing the Internet even up to the day of his death. His love of learning was inspirational to all. Bill is survived by four children, William A. (Mary) Vose, Newport News, Barbara (Richard) Williamson-Clippinger, Findlay, Ohio, Robert C. (JoAnn) Vose, Chesapeake, and Margaret V. (Robert) Kirkland, Richmond, Va. He is also survived by four stepdaughters, Kathleen (Bob) Lutz, Dalzell, S.C., Julia (Rusty) Bryant, Suffolk, Debby Hurdle, New Caney, Texas, and Mary Bruce Barnard, Wilmington, N.C. Bill is also survived by many grandchildren and several great- grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 12, 2009, at 1 p.m. in the Bayside Chapel of Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home. The family will receive friends starting at noon. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of choice.
