After serving in the US Navy during World War I he attended the School of Architecture of the Beaux Arts in Paris.

After his return to New York he became associated with fellow architect Alfred Poor and they started the architectural firm of Rodgers and Poor. The two of them designed the Wright Memorial Monument that was completed in 1932 and placed on top of Kill Devil Hill, a large sand hill the Wright Brothers used as the takeoff point for their first powered flight (Society of Architectural Historians).
