James Alvah Abbitt had two wives. He married Estella Frances Bell in 1899. She appears with him in the 1900 Federal Census. She died Jul 29, 1909 and is buried in Eagle Creek Cem., Hamilton Co., Indiana. They had one child, Alma Agnes Abbitt, who was born Jan 24, 1901.

He then married Mary Dickie Bell (guessing this was Estella's sister) on Sept. 2, 1908, in Bedford, Tremble Co., KY. She appears with him on the 1910 Census, his draft card, 1920 Census, 1930 Census, 1940 Census, and she died June 23, 1950. They had two children: Raymond Bell Abbitt and Cecil C. Abbitt.

James Abbitt is buried at Eagle Creek Cem with his first wife. Mary is buried with her son, Raymond Abbitt in Oak Hill Cemetery.
