Burial with Military Honors presented by the Charles Curry American Legion Post #49 of Clear Lake will be in the Toronto Cemetery, Toronto, SD. Honorary casket bearers will be: Terri Baumeister, Melody Tesch, Erin Redemske, Hope Bjerke and Christopher Jensen. Active casket bearers will be: Corey DeVries, Eric Yunginger, Dominic Bjerke, Joseph Jensen, Tyler Bjerke and Ryan Bjerke. Music will be provided by Ruth Enderle, organist.
Arnold Ernest Bjerke was born March 29, 1919 on the family farm near Toronto, SD to Alfred and Mabel (Anderson) Bjerke. He was raised near Toronto and attended country school. Following his education he worked as a farm hand until being drafted into the United States Army on March 19, 1940. He entered into active duty at Ft. Snelling, MN on March 20, 1941 and began serving overseas 1942. Arnold received the Good Conduct Medal in 1943 and was honorably discharged on November 9, 1945 at Camp McCoy, WI.
On September 24, 1950 Arnold was united in marriage to Lillian Walter in the St. John's Lutheran Church in Altamont, SD. During this time he worked on EW Weisel's farm until 1958 when they moved to Altamont. Arnold started working as a mechanic and owned and operated his own business. He also worked at Kleigel's garage in Goodwin, SD as well as built and moved grain bins for many years. From 1969 to 1973 he worked as a custodian at SDSU in Brookings, SD. On February 18, 1992 Lillian passed away. Arnold remained living in Altamont until he lost his home to a fire in 2000. He then moved to Clear Lake and on May 6, 2009 he entered the Deuel County Good Samaritan Center in Clear Lake. He passed away there on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at the age of 90 years, 11 months and 3 days.
Arnold was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. He enjoyed going for coffee and visiting with friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Lillian; parents; six brothers: Oscar, Arvin, Marvin, Lloyd, Maynard and Vernon and two sisters: Lillian and Mavis.
Arnold is lovingly remembered by his four children: Linda (Dale) Yunginger, Algona, IA, Doris (Jeffrey) Jensen, S. St. Paul, MN, Carol (Wayne) DeVries, Watertown, SD, Loren (Jodie) Bjerke, Altamont, SD; 11 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; one brother, Eddie Bjerke, Farmington, MN; two sisters: Edna (Don) Zischke, Henderson, NV and Leona (Manley) Kirby, Brookings, SD; and many nieces and nephews
